The armistice had just been signed on 11 November 1918, and the Palace of Versailles was seething with excitement. The French Prime Minister Clemenceau suggested that the peace treaty be signed in the Hall of Mirrors, the same place where the German Empire had been proclaimed. The Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919, with the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, in attendance.
