Personal story

So soon after the war, travel was still difficult and expensive, so a visit to Versailles was a major event. You had to leave very early in the morning, leaving the countryside on your bike with your picnic basket on the rack in the back, to go to the station. The trip was very long and started at dawn, not to finish until well into the night. You can see the fatigue in the photo!

The lady on the right is now 90 years old and still gets emotional when she talks about the visit, especially since her two good friends in the photo and the photographer, her husband, have all passed away.

The photo comes from the family archives.
